‘This subjugation of eastern Germans to mostly western German psychoanalysis is a political drama in itself.’

Walking to unity is about witnessing and participating to the act of walking as a political action. I saw this colourful girl at The Day of German Unity on 3rd October 2018. From the corner of an eye she seems slightly hindered by handicap as she was decidedly walking up the path of yellow cities paved from Central Station to the Bundestag. The whole family around her seemed to have a fun day out travelling from out of town with colourful suitcases. Headlined by the motto “Nur Mit Euch” (Only with You), the public celebration on The Day of German Unity (German: Tag der Deutschen Einheit, 03.10.2018 ) emphasises democracy that lives from participation and intervention. While walking the line up of yellow mats showing as many foot-steps in a united Germany that commemorates all German cities - big and small - by alphabetical order up to the Bundestag, I got started with a project and called it 'Walking to unity / a witness to the act of walking as (political) action'. Although they are quick hand-shots while riding a bicycle, I could capture images of the little heroin in action - as she was pacing up from city to city.
WALKING TO UNITY
The Day of German Unity or Reunification (German: Tag der Deutschen Einheit) is the national day of Germany, celebrated on 3 October as a public holiday. It commemorates the anniversary of German reunification in 1990 when the goal of a united Germany, that originated in the middle of the 19th century, was fulfilled again. Therefore, the name addresses neither the re-union nor the union, but the unity of Germany. The Day of German Unity on 3 October has been the German national holiday since 1990, when the reunification was formally completed.
Motto for the 2018 Day of German Unity: Only With You
Around one million visitors are expected at the street festival, which will be held over three days around the Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate. Headlined by the motto “Nur Mit Euch” (Only with You), the public celebration emphasises democracy that lives from participation and intervention.
